But it now transpires that only 0.88 per cent of candidates from the State apply to these exams.

Karnataka, along with Kerala, lag in applications for the SSC exams for jobs in Group B and C, and this is worrying officials. In fact, the regional centre in Bangalore (for Karnataka and Kerala) has launched a special campaign inviting local candidates to apply.

Attractive payIn the Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGE), 2011, conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, around 400 candidates are likely to be posted in Karnataka. Of these, only 31 had applied from Karnataka.

Group B and C posts in the Central government carry attractive pay scales, allowances and other benefits. For instance, the starting gross pay for posts of assistants, income tax inspectors and so on is around Rs. 31,000 in cities like Bangalore.

Too low

Commission Regional Director S. Gopalan told The Hindu that for the CGE 2011, 9.32 lakh applications were received from across the country.

Of these, only 8,162 were from Karnataka. The results were declared recently, with 12,467 posts being filled in different departments. A mere 175 applicants from Karnataka were selected. Of the total posts offered, more than 8,560 were non-interview posts where selection was only on the basis of written examinations.

Similarly, in the CGE 2010, the number of candidates from Karnataka was about 7,000 out of eight lakh applicants. Only 150 were eventually selected from the State, he said.

During his recent interaction with MBA students, Mr. Gopalan was told that they got placements in private companies on a pay package of Rs. 2.5 lakh a year. Mr. Gopalan wondered why candidates were not opting for Central services that offered a better pay package with many benefits.

Mr. Gopalan said of the total 2.5 lakh applications only about 4,000 applications from Karnataka had been received till Monday for CGE 2012, compared to 2.5 lakh applications from across the country.

Comments:

This is a piquant situation reflecting no unemployment in Karnataka or disenchantment. The govt. of Karnataka should examine the ground situation and initiate necessary steps like free coaching, guidence etc. so that more kannada youth can take up central jobs.
