Tremors across eastern coast

Tremors were felt across eastern coast of the country following an 8.6 magnitude earthquake recorded in Aceh province, off Sumatra in Indonesia.

Tremors were felt in Chennai, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and several other cities across South India following the 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia.

Areas near Marina Beach Road in Chennai have been alerted in the wake of several coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands being put on alert, police said.

There were no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of lives.

In Kerala, people in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi experienced slight tremors.

The country’s IT capital Bangalore also experienced mild tremors, police said.

People rushed out of houses and high rise office buildings in panic in these cities.

Kolkata and its neighbourhood were rocked by a mild tremor. Tremors were also felt in North 24 Parganas adjoining Kolkata and in the north Bengal town of Siliguri, officials said.

According to reports, some buildings on Park street in the metropolis developed cracks.

Metro Rail services in Kolkata were suspended from 2:42 p.m. and passengers were asked to vacate stations.

Tsunami alert sounded in Andamans

A tsunami alert has been sounded in the Andaman and Nicobar islands, although there was no

report of any loss of life or damage to property from any of the islands.

Official sources said a tsunami alert has been sounded in the Little Andamans, southern group of islands including the Great Nicobar, Campbell Bay, Katchal as well as the Andamans.

The Andaman and Nicobar Command of the armed forces has also been alerted about a tsunami.

Sources in the Disaster Management department said there was no report of any loss of life or property from any of the islands.

Mild tremors in Odisha

Mild tremors were felt in different parts of Odisha, including the state capital.

Apart from Bhubaneswar, places like Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur were shaken, official sources said.

People working in high-rises and multi-storeyed buildings moved out in panic as also from shopping malls and market places, they said.

India launches WTO case against U.S. steel duties

India has launched a trade dispute to challenge U.S. duties on certain steel products, the World Trade Organization said on its website on Thursday.

The WTO gave no details but said India had "requested consultations" with the United States - the first stage of a formal trade dispute - over U.S. countervailing duties. Countries impose countervailing duties to offset another country's subsidies suspected of giving an unfair trade advantage.

No Tsunami? Why Earthquake Spared Indonesia Today

The powerful earthquake that struck off Indonesia Wednesday sparked a short-lived tsunami alert for much of the Indian Ocean—and panic in the streets of Aceh Province, in which a 2004 tsunami off Indonesia killed some 170,000 people.

Scientists say Indonesia's good fortune Wednesday has everything to do with the size of the quake and the motion of the ocean floor. The surprising strength and location of the earthquake, they add, make it "something new."

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake had a magnitude of 8.6 and was quickly followed by an 8.2-magnitude aftershock. In Aceh hospitals were quickly evacuated, and residents fled to high ground in cars and motorcycles and poured into the streets to search for separated family members, according to the Associated Press.

The temblors also caused several countries in the region to issue tsunami watches, but the alarm was lifted after a few hours when no serious waves were observed.

"There was a tsunami, but the waves were just below 1 meter [3.3 feet]," said Emile Okal, a geophysicist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. "That is significant, but it's not going to do much damage."

This is a sharp contrast to the December 2004 tsunami, when waves reached heights of nearly ten stories.

(Read a National Geographic photographer's account of the 2004 Indonesian tsunami aftermath.)

Quake Hit in Right Place, at Right Size—For Indonesians

There are two main reasons Wednesday's earthquake off Indonesia did not spawn a giant tsunami, Okal said.

First, the quake was of a smaller magnitude—8.6, contrasted with 9.3 for the temblor that struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, in 2004. (See pictures of the 2004 Indonesia tsunami aftermath.)

Second, the quake was what's known as a strike-slip earthquake, where the motion is primarily side-to-side—like two ships sideswiping each other. In the 2004 quake, vast swaths of the seafloor thrust sharply upward, drastically disturbing the waters above.

On Wednesday "the amplitude of the tsunami was less than what it would have been had it involved more vertical motion," Okal said.

(Take a tsunami quiz.)

Indonesia Earthquake "Rather Interesting"

Wednesday's quake is interesting, Okal added, because it did not occur at a so-called subduction zone, where tectonic plates collide and one dives beneath the other into Earth's mantle.

Rather, the earthquake happened about a hundred miles (150 kilometers) from the nearest subduction zone, making the temblor an "intraplate" quake. Intraplate quakes tend to be much smaller, on the order of magnitude 6 or so, Okal said.

The combination of these two factors—a high magnitude for an intraplate quake and its strike-slip nature—makes Wednesday's earthquake "rather intriguing," Okal added.

"This is in a sense something new," he said. "It's something we've never seen at this level of size in this particular area."

Battered baby dies: Afreen gives up her fight for life after being 'brutalised by her own father' for being born a girl

By Mail Today Reporter

PUBLISHED: 18:57 GMT, 11 April 2012 | UPDATED: 07:48 GMT, 12 April 2012

For about a week, she tried hard to hold on and fight hard. But allegedly brutalised by her father for being born a girl, she stood little chance.

Baby Neha Afreen died after a cardiac arrest in a government hospital in Bangalore on Wednesday morning.

The three-month-old baby was admitted to the Vani Vilas Hospital on Thursday night, April 5, with a severe head injury, dislocated neck and bite and burn marks on her body.

Her father Umar Farooq, a car painter, is accused of inflicting the injuries on her because he wanted a male child.

Though Afreen had showed signs of recovery on Tuesday, her condition deteriorated by evening because of repeated convulsions.

'She was in semi-comatose state since Tuesday evening. We had put her on life support system. Unfortunately, she could not make it,' said Dr Some Gowda, medical superintendent of the hospital.

The hospital authorities were awaiting a team of doctors from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences for assistance because the baby had suffered internal head injuries.

But Afreen could no longer fight. She had hurried respiration of 30-40 per minute against the normal 20-25 and also pathycardia, or increased heart rate.

She breathed her last at 11.10 am shortly after a cardiac arrest.

The baby's mother, 19-year-old Reshma Banu, was inconsolable when the doctors broke the news to her. Afreen was her only child and she had been in a state of shock since Thursday.

Reshma claims that her 37-year-old drunkard husband used to beat her up since Afreen was born.

Last Thursday, he came home drunk in the evening and abused her again for giving birth to a girl.

When Reshma went off to sleep, Farooq is accused of stuffing clothes into Afreen's mouth to muffle her cries and hitting her with a blunt object.

Reshma, who woke up in the middle of the night, saw the baby suffering convulsions.

She informed her husband, who appeared uninterested. When the baby vomited blood, Farooq fled.

With the help of her neighbours, Reshma hospitalised Afreen. It's alleged Farooq had assaulted the child twice in the past but Reshma did not complain because she wanted to save the marriage.

Once, he had bitten the baby. On another occasion, Reshma found cigarette burn marks on her forehead and back.

Reshma was initially afraid of approaching the police. The hospital authorities informed the Child Welfare Committee, which prevailed upon her to lodge a complaint against her husband.

Farooq, who went absconding after the alleged assault of his own daughter, was arrested on Sunday and is now in judicial custody till April 21. He will now face murder charges.

Baby Afreen

The baby's death has outraged the civil society just weeks after the story of Baby Falak had shocked the country.

The Karnataka state commission for protection of child rights demanded that Afreen's death be treated as a murder case because the attack on the baby was intentional.

The state human rights commission has sent a notice to Bangalore city police commissioner B. G. Jyothi Prakash Mirji to personally oversee the case and report in two weeks.

National Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Shantha Sinha demanded speedy action against the father.

Killing of the female foetus and the girl child is rampant in India where even the educated and the rich are known to prefer male child.

According to the 2011 Census report, the sex ratio in India stands at 914 females per 1,000 males.

A Unicef report said sex selective abortion by unethical medical professionals has grown into a Rs 1,000-crore industry.

Maruti Suzuki launches Ertiga, enters MUV market

By Indo Asian News Service | IANS India Private Limited – 9 hours agoNew Delhi, April 12 (IANS) Passenger car market leader Maruti Suzuki Thursday made an entry into the multi utility vehicle (MUV) segment, launching Ertiga, priced between Rs.5.89 lakh and Rs.7.30 lakh for the petrol variant and Rs.7.90 lakh and Rs.8.45 lakh for the diesel-powered one (ex-showroom Delhi).

"Ertiga is a major step forward for Maruti Suzuki. We will try and gain as much of volume (sales) as possible with Ertiga," S. Nakanishi, managing director and chief executive, said at the global launch of the car here.

The company said the MUV segment had emerged as the fastest growing sub-segment among utility vehicles (UV) and Ertiga will help consolidate its position in the market.

Maruti suzuki did not have a vehicle in this segment earlier. An MUV or multi-utility vehicle is a minivan -- people-carrier or people-mover -- that is designed for personal use.

Nakanishi said the firm's "prime focus" will be the domestic Indian market.

"We plan to start the CKD (completely knockdown) operations of Ertiga to Indonesia," he added.

The new MUV received its name from Indonesian language in which Ertiga means Three Rows.

The petrol variant of Ertiga is powered by a 1,373 cc K14 engine which can churn out power worth 95 ps at the rate of 6,000 rotations per minute (RPM) with a fuel efficiency of 16.02 km per litre.

The diesel variant is powered by a 1,248 cc D13 engine which produces 90 ps at the rate of 4,000 RPM with a fuel efficiency of 20.77 km per litre.

The company has spent a total of Rs.410 crore on the projects, including the money spent by the vendors.

The company said it had a current market share of about 38.8 percent. Segment-wise, it has a majority share of 55.2 percent in the petrol segment and 18 percent in the diesel.

The company is expecting the 2012-13 to be a good year in terms of sales, as it sees a rebound in consumer sentiment.

India 'battered' Baby Afreen dies

11 April 2012 Last updated at 06:58 GMT Baby Afreen (Photo: K Venkatesh) Baby Afreen's case has attracted widespread attention A three-month-old baby girl allegedly battered by her father has died in a hospital in India's Bangalore city.

Hospital authorities said Baby Afreen had a cardiac arrest on Wednesday and attempts to revive her failed.

She was brought to the hospital last week with severe head injuries and burn marks on her body.

Her father was arrested after her mother alleged that he beat up the baby because he was upset at having a daughter instead of a son.

But the father has denied beating the child and said he did not know why his wife had alleged so.

"We are sad to announce that Baby Afreen suffered a cardiac arrest at 10:40am [06:10GMT], we tried resuscitating her for half an hour, but unfortunately we couldn't save her," Professor R Premalatha of Bangalore's Vani Vilas government hospital told reporters.

The case of Baby Afreen has attracted widespread attention with women's and children's groups demanding tough action against those who hurt her.

The case follows the death last month of a severely battered toddler who was taken to a Delhi hospital in January.

That child, named Baby Falak, was brought to hospital with serious injuries, including human bite marks all over her body, by a teenage girl.

The case of the toddler had gripped India, provoking widespread outrage and condemnation.

India's Maruti fights falling market share with new model

India's top car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki launched its first utility vehicle on Thursday, breaking into one of the country's fastest-growing automobile segments as it battles to recover lost market share.

The Japanese-controlled firm, which has seen its share of the Indian market decline to below 40 percent for the first time in its history, said the new vehicle would be important to helping drive future sales growth.

The company, majority-owned by Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, competitively priced its new seven-seater vehicle, the Ertiga, at 589,000 rupees ($11,430) for the basic model.

"Utility vehicles are a promising segment and we have been largely absent from it," Maruti Suzuki India chief executive Shinzo Nakanishi told reporters at the Ertiga's launch in New Delhi.

"The Ertiga is a major step forward for Maruti Suzuki" that will suit "many urban families," Nakanishi said.

Maruti said the Ertiga holds big potential for Maruti Suzuki with sales in the multi-purpose vehicle segment growing by around 20 percent a year.

The launch of the model comes after the company's passenger vehicle market share slumped to 38 percent during the last fiscal year from a peak a few years ago of over 50 percent.

The launch of the Ertiga comes as global auto makers such as General Motors and Ford also plan to introduce new vehicles in India's utility vehicle segment that accounts for around 10 percent of the Indian automobile market.

Increasingly affluent Indian car buyers have been scaling up in the past few years from the still dominant small car market to sedans and utility vehicles.

Maruti, India's biggest carmaker by sales, said the vehicle was designed primarily for the Indian market but that it also expects to sell the car in other South East Asian markets.

During the last financial year to March 31, Maruti's sales fell nearly 11 percent to 1.13 million units, hit by a crippling labour dispute at one of its plants in the northern Indian state of Haryana and a weakening economy.

Tsunami scare tests new systems

A 9.1-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami which killed nearly 230,000 people in southeast Asia in December 2004. A 9.1-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami which killed nearly 230,000 people in southeast Asia in December 2004. NEW: The warning system worked well, Indonesia saysNearly 230,000 people died in the 2004 tsunamiWednesday's quakes were different, CNN meteorologists sayWhile warnings and responses have improved, there's still a long way to go in some areas

(CNN) -- Indonesia's response to a massive earthquake and a tsunami scare Wednesday highlights a critical reality: Warning systems and emergency responses have come a long way since the catastrophe of eight years ago.

But there's still work to be done -- not just in Indonesia, but in some other countries throughout the region as well.

Fears that Wednesday's 8.6-magnitude quake and resulting tsunami alert could bring a repeat of the 2004 disaster dissipated quickly as seismologists determined that Wednesday's events were very different and much less dangerous.

In the intervening hours, Indonesia put in place many of the procedures it has worked on for years, including some practiced at a drill witnessed by CNN in 2009.

"The lesson of 2004 is something that we're not going to repeat at this stage," vowed Teuku Faizasyah, a spokesman for the Indonesian president's office.

Speaking to CNN while evacuations were under way in parts of his country, he said the government was working "to bring confidence among the people that the government is with them."

Later, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center lifted a tsunami watch for the entire Indian Ocean, indicating the threat had passed.

"The tsunami warning system worked well," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. "People reacted quickly and evacuated to higher ground. Mosques, churches helped spread the information to the public. There was panic but that's expected."

No serious casualties or major damage was reported Wednesday from the quake and the 8.2-magnitude aftershock off the coast of Sumatra. Four people were slightly injured on Simeulue Island, off the coast of Aceh, the disaster management agency spokesman said.

In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that ultimately killed nearly 230,000 people in the region.

"In 2004, the quake was closer to the coast, stronger and was a different kind of earthquake," CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said. "In 2004, the sea floor moved vertically, and this thrust displaced a lot of water, which produced the large tsunami. In this case, the plates moved more horizontally, and therefore a large tsunami was not generated."

"Even though the epicenters were only about 200 miles (about 320 kilometers) apart, they occurred on different tectonic plates," CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller added. "There are several plates that come together in this area, which is why it is so tectonically active. Today's quake occurred on the Indian plate, while the 2004 quake occurred on the Burma plate."

A 9.1-magnitude quake is 3.2 times larger, and more than 5 times stronger, than an 8.6-magnitude quake, CNN meteorologist Sean Morris said.

Tsunami warning sirens blared Wednesday in parts of Indonesia, and the other steps taken show that "governments are more prepared," said CNN weather anchor Mari Ramos.

"There are sirens in place along coastal communities. There are buoys in the ocean to measure water level changes. There is better communication among government agencies, countries and the media. The word gets out much more quickly, and that helps saves lives," Ramos said.

However, "the number of measuring devices in the Indian Ocean is tiny compared to the Pacific. It's a start, but more are needed."

He watched a well-organized tsunami drill, complete with droning alarms and people covered in fake blood fleeing from an imaginary wave.

Authorities have built tsunami shelters that are raised high and can hold several hundred people, he said. Escape routes are marked.

While it was not immediately clear how many people headed to higher ground Wednesday, some videos from the region showed people apparently leaving low-lying areas.

That speaks to another important change from 2004: People are more aware of the danger.

Back then, "there was nothing," Rivers said. "No one really knew what to do, no one even knew what a tsunami was."

Now, Ramos adds, "Overall, the general population is much more aware."

The need for that awareness applies to citizens of other countries as well, said Walter Braunohler, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Thailand.

"Sadly, we did learn a lot of lessons from that (2004) natural disaster," he said Wednesday. "And one of the biggest ones is that people should really keep in touch with their embassy."

Other countries in the region also reacted quickly to Wednesday's tsunami threat.

Thailand issued an evacuation order for everyone along the Andaman coast Wednesday, according to state-run news agency MCOT.

In the Maldives, some resorts were evacuated as a precaution, according to CNN's Erin Burnett, who was on vacation in the islands.

But, she said, "what strikes me most is essentially the lack of a warning system" in the Maldives. Officials rely primarily on information from the U.S. Geological Survey, she said.

That speaks to the problem the region still faces, Ramos said. "The fact that the Maldives were included in the (warning center) bulletin is an improvement from 2004. But there's still a long way to go."

Indonesia earthquake: Why no tsunami this time?

A powerful earthquake and aftershock struck the Indian Ocean off of northern Indonesia Wednesday, triggering tsunami watches and evacuations throughout the Indian Ocean basin, from Australia to Kenya.

The first temblor, a magnitude 8.6 quake, struck at 2:38 p.m. local time, along a segment of a fault on the sea floor some 269 miles southwest of the coastal city of Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province. A second, 8.2 magnitude quake struck two hours later roughly 120 miles south of the first quake's epicenter.

Both quakes occurred at relatively shallow depths – 14 miles and 10 miles – beneath the sea floor, according to data gathered by the US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.

So far, the quakes appear to have done little damage and caused no fatalities, although people felt the shaking as far away as the east coast of India. In Banda Aceh, many residents streamed into the streets when the shaking began, according to press reports from the city.

Memories of the disastrous December 2004 earthquake and tsunami remain fresh. The event left 230,000 dead throughout the Indian Ocean basin as the tsunami in some locations reached heights of up to 90 feet.

Though both of Wednesday's large quakes join the magnitude 9.1 event in 2004 event as “great” earthquakes – the strongest of six categories – the initial temblor Wednesday reportedly pushed only a 30-inch-high surge of water onto Indonesia's west coast.

In addition, the 2004 event released nearly six times as much energy as the first quake that struck on Wednesday and some 22 times more energy than the second.

The difference? Location, suggests Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center.

The 2004 rupture occurred along the northern reaches of a subduction zone that hugs the west coast of Indonesia and defines the arc of Indonesia's islands.

The quake occurred in a section of the zone where a vast patch of crust known as the Indian plate is sliding beneath the much smaller Burma plate. Quakes along such subduction zones tend to generate the planet's most violent temblors because the surface areas sliding past each other are large.

Researchers estimate that the patch of the subduction zone affected in the 2004 quake covered an area roughly the size of California. The amount of slip along the length of this patch was 50 feet.

Along the deep-sea trench that marks the subduction zone, the quake lifted the overlying crust several yards. The sudden upward shove along the length of the rupture zone generated the enormous tsunamis the region experienced.

Today's quakes occurred farther offshore and on a different type of fault, Ms. Vaughan explains.

The faults involved Wednesday are so-called strike-slip faults that sit squarely on the Australian plate, another of the plates forming the subduction zone off Indonesia. Strike-slip faults tend to be vertical cracks in the crust. This means that the plates usually slide by each other without radically altering the height of the sea floor.

By contrast, the thrust faults along a subduction zone run diagonally downward from the sea floor as one plate slips under the other. This increases the possibility of disturbing the height of the sea floor. It also means the area of the surfaces sliding past each other is much greater than during a strike-slip rupture.

“We've had a series of these occur since 2004,” Vaughan says, referring to undersea quakes on the Australian plate. The most recent occurred in January – a magnitude 7.2 quake whose epicenter was only about 13 miles from that of the 8.6 quake on Wednesday.

The faults involved in Wednesday's quakes are oriented in the same direction as the general direction of travel the Australian plate itself is following, suggesting that the ruptures are tied to the plate's movement, although to some degree the event also may represent the crust's continued adjustment to the major change the 2004 event brought to the region, Vaughan says.

Indonesia earthquake, Indian Ocean tsunami watch (video, tweets)

A tsunami watch was issued for countries bordering the Indian Ocean after a powerful earthquake hit off the coast of Indonesia on Wednesday, triggering panic and evacuations in areas where a devastating wave struck in 2004.

An Acehnese woman with a child tries to hail a car to take her to higher ground after a powerful earthquake on Wednesday. (CHAIDEER MAHYUDDIN - AFP/GETTY IMAGES) The quake was measured at an 8.7 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed by a strong aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2, which shook Indonesia’s western coast.

On Twitter, people said tremors were in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and India. Buildings on Malaysia’s West Coast shook for almost a minute.

The initial tsunami alert stretched from Indonesia and Thailand to South Africa and Iran. It was later revised to an alert only for residents living along the western coast of Indonesia, and included Sumatra island and the Mentawai islands.

A tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004 killed more than 230,000 people. On Wednesday, that memory was still fresh as this tweet came from Phuket, Thailand:

From Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, one man tweeted: “Banda Aceh after the earthquake. Electricity, phone and the traffic light off. #PrayForAceh #PrayForSumatra.”

After the earthquake, strong aftershocks were felt throughout the area. One aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 shook Indonesia’s western coast. The first part of this tweet translates to: “There are aftershocks.”

Aid groups, which saw more than $14 billion in humanitarian aid donated during the 2004 tsunami, sent tweets saying they were on the ground and ready to help:

KFC Thailand in earthquake promotion apology

BANGKOK - KFC Thailand apologised on Thursday for a post on its Facebook page urging Thais to hurry home and monitor earthquake news with a promotional bucket of chicken as tsunami fears gripped the nation.

While people in coastal areas rushed to reach higher ground in the wake of a huge earthquake in Indonesia on Wednesday, the KFC Thailand fan page told followers to order a takeaway.

“People should hurry home this evening to monitor the earthquake situation and don’t forget to order the KFC menu, which will be delivered direct to your hands,” it said.

The post, which was later removed, generated a storm of outrage on Thai webpages.

“The person behind this advertisement should be fired for their lack of common sense and responsibility,” said one of the dozens of posters on the subject on the Pantip web board.

A new message on the KFC Facebook page on Thursday apologised for the “mistake”.

“The KFC Thailand fanpage team... would like to apologise for an inappropriate post relating to the disaster,” it said.

An Indian Ocean-wide tsunami alert was issued after a 8.6-magnitude quake struck off the city of Banda Aceh and was followed by another undersea quake measured at 8.2.

The tremor prompted fears of a repeat of the 9.1-magnitude quake in 2004 that unleashed an Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 220,000 people, including an estimated 5,400 people in Thailand alone.

But no large tsunami was generated by Wednesday’s earthquakes, during which five people in Aceh province died.

Cricket: Murali, de Villiers script RCB win

AB de Villiers hit an unbeaten 64 as Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Delhi Daredevils by 20 runs in the Indian Premier League on Saturday (India time).

The South African's knock proved the cornerstone of the home side's innings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore as they reached 8-157 off their 20 overs.

In reply, the Daredevils made a strong start before Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan (3-25) stepped in with three wickets to end the chase early.

Aaron Finch (25) and Naman Ojha (33) forged a 42-run partnership after the early loss of skipper Virender Sehwag for a first-ball duck, before both players fell to the wily spin of Muralitharan.

Venugopal Rao (18) and Yogesh Nagar (16) kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Daredevils but Andrew McDonald struck in the 14th over to dismiss Rao after a fantastic catch by Mayank Agarwal.

Royal Challengers skipper Daniel Vettori claimed Nagar's scalp before he could build a steady partnership with Irfan Pathan. The left-hander failed to repeat his performance from the previous game as he was run out for 24.

The Daredevils required 27 runs to win from the last over but fell short as Doug Bracewell (12 not out) and Morne Morkel (two not out) were left at the crease.

Earlier, the home side made a lightning start as McDonald smashed 30 runs from 19 deliveries.

But it was de Villiers' unbeaten 64 off 42 that ensured the Royal Challengers set a formidable target for the visitors.

After reaching 2-56, the runs dried up as the Daredevils picked up two quick wickets to dismiss Virat Kohli (8) and Saurabh Tiwary (1).

Mayank Agarwal pitched in with a 16-run cameo but it was the dependable de Villiers who held on to his end and piled on the misery for the Delhi bowlers.

After the spurt of wickets in the middle, the Daredevils bowling seemed out of sorts after Irfan Pathan's penultimate over cost them 18 runs.

Bracewell was the pick of the bowlers with 3-32 while Morkel finished with 2-30.

Pathan had a forgettable outing yet again with the ball after he went wicketless for 47 runs.

IIT-JEE and AIEEE entrance tests to be merged from 2013

Union Human Resource Development Ministry will hold a meeting with the Indian Institutes of Technology to address their concern over the proposed common national examination for science and engineering for Central institutes that is to be implemented from 2013.

The older IITs — Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Bombay, Guwahati and Madras were the ones that raised the concern.

The meeting will be held on April 11 and the IIT Directors, representatives of the faculty federation and other faculty members have been invited. Its outcome will be further deliberated at the IIT Council meet to be held on April 14, though the IITs have not questioned need to hold a common entrance examination.

Last month, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal announced merger of the entrance examinations of the Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).

A common test would be held and the best-scoring students could choose an institution of their choice.

The five Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research had subsequently agreed to adopt the common entrance test that will cover admissions to 15 IITs, 30 National Institutes of Technology and four Indian Institutes of Information Technology. Private institutions and States can also adopt the test.

While Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Chandigarh have decided to join this system, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Puducherry and West Bengal sought more time to study the proposal. All universities and institutions offering engineering courses will now use the all-India merit list for admissions.

ObjectionsThe IITs recently expressed reservation over the entrance test being only of objective-type questions and the use of a weightage formula to consider the Class XII board exam performance. The IITs made it clear that they would like to conduct the test, instead of entrusting it with the Central Board of Secondary Education.

The IITs pointed out that the new system with higher weightage for Class XII board examinations was not practical.

Since the assessment system varied among school boards, it would not be possible to assess all students by the same scale and weightage.

Also, the use of only objective-type questions in the proposed test has not found favour with the IITs, which have suggested that the test should carry long answer-type questions.

The proposed common eligibility test will consist of two parts.

The first will be an aptitude test of objective type testing the students' abilities of comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning.

The second is an advance test based on the students' problem-solving abilities for basic science subjects.

IIT-JEE has already lost its discriminatory powers due to objective kind of problems. Why can't just leave IITs alone when they are doing their jobs nicely. Let there be IEEE for all other colleges.

from:  Dilawar Posted on: Apr 6, 2012 at 00:23 IST

The HRD needs to answer the question of weightage, what do they hope to achieve by it? Why is it any different from using the board marks for qualifying? Why is precious resources and time going to be wasted in complicated calculations of percentiles and normalizations that is going to leave every student unsatisfied?
They also need to answer the faculty’s question what of the malpractices in various small towns and cities that are impossible to monitor.
What about the stress students will have to undergo because everything will depend on the board marks, the board exam can be given only once and what if that time the student is sick or does not do well?
Besides this there is also the question on the CBSE conducting the proposed exam, IITs have never trusted many places like Kota and Ajmer to conduct the JEE now HRD proposes to conduct it in every small town?
Also of what standard should it be? How can one exam cater to the CET level and JEE level? Will it be a watered down version of

FURTHER DELAY TO BROAD IPL DEBUT | Sporting Life - Cricket News | Live ball-by-ball scorecards, Sri Lanka v England

Stuart Broad's Indian Premier League debut will be further delayed after the England Twenty20 captain was ruled out of all cricket for three weeks.

Broad flew home early from England's tour of Sri Lanka due to a calf strain suffered in the first Test at Galle, and the England and Wales Cricket Board announced they would monitor his recovery upon his return to England.

The Nottinghamshire man's recovery period will extend until the end of the month, with the ECB announcing: "Broad will be assessed regularly over the coming weeks with a view to returning to cricket with Nottinghamshire in early May."

Broad missed the first year of a three-year contract with the Kings XI Punjab due to injury and was unavailable when this season's competition began on April 4.

While Twenty20 experience in the sub-continent would be ideal for England's short-form skipper ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka later this year, England are unwilling to gamble with Broad's longer term fitness.

The injury to his right calf followed a sprain to his other ankle earlier in the tour, the latest in a concerning sequence of fitness problems for Broad, who left the 2010/11 Ashes after two Tests due to a stomach muscle problem that went on to keep him out of the World Cup.

He then suffered a shoulder injury that prevented him from captaining the side in two Twenty20 matches against West Indies in September and ruled him out of the limited-overs series in India that followed.

(together with its affiliates, "KKR") announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire certain Barnett Shale and Arkoma Basin properties (the "Assets") from WPX Energy (“WPX”) for $306 million. The transaction, which is expected to close in the second quarter, is being made through KKR Natural Resources (“KNR”), KKR’s partnership with Premier Natural Resources (“Premier”) to pursue investments in North American oil and gas properties, and is KNR’s third acquisition in the Barnett Shale.

The Assets are comprised of 27,000 net acres in North Central Texas and Eastern Oklahoma and 66,000 net acres in the Arkoma. The Barnett shale properties have a current net production of approximately 67 million cubic feet per day.

KNR has acquired over $900 million of assets since inception, including over $600mm of assets to date in 2012, and now operates over 150 mmcfe/d of net production. With $1 billion of capital currently available for investment, KNR has the capacity to purchase over $2 billion of additional properties and will seek to acquire high-quality, producing assets both within and outside its core operating areas over the next few years.

“We see attractive opportunities to invest behind the development of domestic energy resources and remain excited about the opportunity to grow our natural resources platform by continuing to acquire non-core oil and gas properties from high quality operators and allowing them to reinvest the proceeds in their attractive growth opportunities,” said Jonathan Smidt, a Member of KKR and Head of KKR Natural Resources.

KKR announced its partnership with Premier in February, 2010. Founded in June 2006 by former executives of Vintage Petroleum, Inc., Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Premier currently operates a portfolio of assets located in the Barnett Shale, the Texas Gulf Coast, the Permian Basin, Louisiana, and Mississippi and has experience operating assets in most of the major producing basins in the United States.

KKR has been investing in the energy sector for more than twenty years, and today KKR's energy business spans the globe and covers the full energy supply chain. KKR's recent oil and gas transactions include Samson Resources and Hilcorp Resources, as well as the formation of partnerships with Chesapeake Energy and El Paso Corporation. A complete list of KKR’s energy investments is available on KKR.com.

Nikki Haley hit by Time, Twitter

Washington, April 10 (IANS) After facing a "bizarre" and "insensitive" question about Sikh taxi drivers from a top editor, South Carolina's Indian American Governor Nikki Haley has become the latest victim of a rumour spreading as "news" on Twitter.

"It took only two minutes," the New York Times reported, as "an unfounded report on a little-known blog claiming that Gov. Nikki R. Haley was about to be indicted rocketed from South Carolina political circles into national circulation".

"The item's rapid journey from hearsay to mainstream journalism, largely via Twitter, forced Haley to rush to defend herself against a false rumour," reported the influential US daily.

In retrospect, there were clear reasons to doubt the March 29 report, from a blog called the Palmetto Public Record, that Haley was facing indictment on tax fraud charges, Times said.

As the daily pointed out, the blog's editor, Logan Smith, never asked the governor's office for comment before he posted his report. Later, in an e-mail, Smith said he could not be sure whether his sources were correct.

And journalists from major news outlets, including The Washington Post, CBS News,The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed did not stop to check first before reposting Smith's report on Twitter.

By the next morning, South Carolina's largest newspaper, The State in Columbia, had an article on its front page.

Haley's office, which chalked the report up to a plant by a political opponent, later released a letter from the Internal Revenue Service declaring that there was no tax investigation.

Days later, Haley, who has lived with an unfounded blog report of marital infidelity since before she took office, faced a "bizarre" question from Time magazine editor Belinda Luscombe at the end of an interview.

"In New York City, which you're visiting for a couple of days, a lot of our taxi drivers are Sikhs. If you get one, are you going to give him a slightly bigger tip?" she was asked.

Born Nimrata Randhawa to Sikh immigrant parents from India, Haley seemed unfazed as she responded with a laugh, "Oh, I give the same tip to everyone."

Politico, a leading a political daily called it a bizarre question, and The Hill, which focuses on Congressional politics sounded off on the incident under the headline, "Haley forced to sit through joke about Sikhism."

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Tuesday set hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) a 166-run target in an Indian Premier League-5 match at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium here.

Put in to bat by Royal Challengers skipper Daniel Vettori, the Knight Riders could manage 165 for eight wickets in 20 overs after a blistering start by the top order but the innings collapsed mid-way.

Earlier, a small fire in the eastern stand of the stadium delayed the start of the match by 20 minutes.

Stop vilification campaign against Modi: BJP

New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) After a special panel probing the 2002 Gujarat riots gave a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Tuesday the "vilification campaign" against him should stop.

"'No evidence against Narendra Modi' says SIT appointed by Supreme Court. A big relief for us. Ten years of vilification campaign must stop," senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj posted on microblogging website Twitter.

Speaking on the same lines, party General Secretary Ravi Shankar Prasad said there was a "campaign" to frame Modi in the riots.

"There has been a national and also international campaign against Narendra Modi, to somehow frame him in the Gujarat riots. It has become the only mission of certain people and organisations," he said.

"But investigation cannot be continued on manufactured evidence. The law will have its procedure, those guilty in the riots are being punished," he said hailing the report.

He also said people should see the "good work of the Gujarat government", the development and peace and the fact that there has not been any riot in 10 years.

"It is the most growth-oriented state of India being discussed all over the world," he said.

A special panel probing the 2002 Gujarat riots gave a clean chit to Narendra Modi Tuesday, absolving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader of the accusation that he had a role in a case related to the communal carnage.

Metropolitan magistrate M.S. Bhatt, who received the closure report of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in February, in his order said the investigators have found no evidence against any of the accused, including Modi, in the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre, one of the cases related to the widespread riots 10 years ago.

Zakia Jafri, wife of the slain Congress leader Ehsaan Jafri who was killed by a rioting mob, had accused Modi and other senior government officers of being conspirators in the riots.

Alec Stewart: IPL can benefit KP

By Alec Stewart Former England captain and BBC Radio 5 live summariser Kevin Pietersen's unbelievable knock of 151 helped to set up England's victory in the second Test against Sri Lanka - and now he will take his considerable talents to the Indian Premier League.

I have no problem with him going out to play for the Delhi Daredevils - it is the way the world of cricket is these days. I will not knock anyone who makes that professional decision.

Bubba Watson

"It was epic television - you couldn't make it up. Bubba Watson might not have an orthodox swing, but the shot he played out of the trees was amazing. The Masters proved, once again, to be one of the highlights of the sporting calendar."

He has gone there on the back of a brilliant innings for his country and, if it does help him, I will not question it because Kevin is one of the best prepared players I have seen in the game.

If he can bring back some knowledge that will help the England squad, it is a wise move.

He certainly played a key role in helping England square the series in Sri Lanka, thus remaining the number one Test side in the world.

Alastair Cook played very well too, proving the batsmen have learnt some lessons and are dealing with sub-Continental conditions better.

If you look at it from a series point of view, Trott scored a fantastic hundred in the first Test, Pietersen and Cook did the business in the second Test, Bell got a 50 and Strauss a 60.

What the batsmen need to do now is build on it so, when they go to India at the back end of the year, we don't see the same issues the team faced this winter.

I thought Samit Patel did an okay job in his two Test matches, and I did see Andy Flower's comments about finding an all-rounder for the team next winter.

Samit is not going to be a frontline spinner at this stage of his career - Graeme Swann showed all his world-class qualities in the last Test match, as did Monty Panesar in the UAE - and an all-rounder has to get into the side because of both of his skills.

Samit is a back-up spinner and, as a batsman, which is his strongest suit, he will be a far better player for his two-match experience in Sri Lanka.

Mario Balotelli

"He is a highly talented player who is testing the man-management skills of Roberto Mancini - but no individual is bigger than the team. If people's behaviour has a detrimental effect on the team, there is a time when you have to say goodbye."

Every country would like an all-rounder like South Africa's Jacques Kallis, but he is probably the best all-rounder since Sir Garfield Sobers.

England have not managed to replace Andrew Flintoff, like we did not replace Botham before him.

We could turn our wicketkeeper into the team's all-rounder, like they did with me. Matt Prior is certainly good enough to bat at number six and, with his keeping skills, he is a genuine all-rounder.

If you do that, however, you also need a bowler who is useful with the bat.

Nobody stands out at the moment, but that is not to say Tim Bresnan cannot develop into a genuine number seven Test cricketer. He is probably a number eight at the moment.

It's the same with Stuart Broad, too. It's just whether they have the time to develop their batting when they play so little county cricket.

The international itinerary makes that a problem, but we do want more than one player coming through, to push this current group of players.

Regardless of results this winter, England will have gone into the summer matches against West Indies and South Africa confident.

England at home are a completely different team to England on the sub-Continent, from a bowling and batting point of view.

They will be expected to beat West Indies and, maybe, they are narrow favourites against South Africa at this moment in time.

Alec Stewart was speaking to BBC Sport's Marc Higginson

Reno Aces: Opening series split doesn't worry Butler

Winning can mask a lot of weaknesses, and it did for the Aces in their two season-opening victories. But those areas were easy to spot in the past two games, including Sunday afternoon?s 5-2 loss.

The Aces? offense was non-existent in all but one inning for the second straight day, and it led to them settling for a series split.

?It just tells you that we have to continue to push,? manager Brett Butler said. ?Not that they haven?t. But we have to go out there and do it each game.?

The Aces (2-2) let a 2-1 lead slip away for the second straight game, this time when Colorado Springs scored three times in the sixth inning against Zach Kroenke in front of 5,218 spectators at Aces Ballpark.

After the Aces took the lead in the second, they did not get a runner past second base again until the ninth.

?We?re not at full capacity yet,? Butler said, referring to his team?s three-deep disabled list. ?We?re just trying to hold our head above water for the time being.

?I?m not discouraged at all. The guys just have to bear down at key times and get the job done.?

Butler?s optimism is from a combination of faith that the offense will come around and that the starting pitching has been very good.

Kroenke gave up four runs in five innings Sunday, but he had allowed just one ? a leadoff home run to DJ LeMahieu in the first ? through five before he ran into trouble in the sixth.

The first three Sky Sox reached to give Colorado Springs the lead before Butler went to Jensen Lewis, who allowed an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.

?He just got a couple pitches up,? Butler said of Kroenke. ?Other than that, I was very happy with his performance. I liked the way he went about his business. He just dropped his elbow up a couple times and left (the pitch) up. But that was it.?

It was the fourth solid outing by a Reno starter, following Barry Enright, Chris Jakubauskas and Joe Martinez.

?I feel good about what they?ve done in the first four outings,? Butler said. ?If they continue to do that, we?ll win a lot of ballgames.?

But such optimism can remove only some of the sting from splitting a series in which the Aces were ahead 2-0.

?Now, we got a new series and have to go through Salt Lake,? Butler said. ?Hopefully, we can do a little better than we just did.?

Tibco leads women's standings after Redlands

Kenda/5-Hour Energy stormed to the top of the first USA Cycling National Race Calendar standings off the strength of Phil Gaimon's four-day run in the yellow jersey at the series-opening Redlands Bicycle Classic last week in southern California. Gaimon also leads the men's individual standings.

Team Tibco to the Top followed a similar path to the women's team lead, with individual series leader Megan Guarnier taking yellow on the first day at Redlands and holding it through the end of the four-day race.

Gaimon won the prologue time trial by three seconds and never relinquished the yellow jersey, fending off multiple attacks on the final day under challenging wet and cold conditions. Bissell Pro Cycling's Paddy Bevin took three-consecutive stage wins at Redlands and secured the second spot in the individual standings, just 22 points behind the leader. Optum-Kelly Benefits rider Alex Candelario, who finished second to Bevin at the stage 2 criterium, sits third overall, while defending champion Francisco Mancebo (Competitive Cyclist) is fourth.

The men's team standings reflect the top three spots in the individual category, with Gaimon's Kenda squad in the lead and Bevin's Bissell team grabbing second, 32 points in arrears. Candelario's Optum team is in third place, 87 points down.

Kenda director Frankie Andreu said the team laid it all out on the line to bring home the squad's first NRC win and to seize the NRC individual and team leads.

"It takes a lot of sacrifice to be able to win a big race," Andreu said of his eight-man Redlands roster. "So for Kenda/5-Hour Energy, this is our first big NRC win, and we're pumped. I'm super excited. Phil's super excited, and we're just happy for Kenda/5-Hour Energy."

Guarnier won the leader's jersey with a six-second win in the prologue time trial over defending Redlands champion Amber Neben (Specialized-lululemon), and then followed it up with top-five finishes in each of the three remaining stages. Joelle Numainville (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies), who won the criterium and finished second twice for third overall at Redlands, is in second place in the NRC individual standings, 76 points behind the leader. Redlands runner-up and Sunset Road Race winner Alison Powers (Now and Novartis for MS) is third overall, 82 points down. Neben is fourth, while her teammate and Beaumont stage winner Loren Rowney grabbed the fifth spot.

Tibco now leads Optum by just 20 points in the team competition, with Now and Novartis 61 points down for third.

"It's awesome," Guarnier said of the Redlands results. "We're a really great team, and everybody poured their hearts into this, so it's great. This is Tibco's first NRC stage race win, so it's a pretty good feeling."

After Redlands, Guarnier's team headed immediately for Europe, where they will compete in several World Cup races starting with the Tour of Flanders April 1 in Belgium

The NRC continues for the men in two weeks with the Tour of the Battenkill April 15 in Cambridge, New York. The women rejoin the fray at the Joe Martin Stage Race in Fayetteville, Ark., April 26-29.
